The STAR Institute for SPD is a pioneering treatment, research and education center for sensory processing through the lifespan. The STAR treatment center provides intensive, short-term, sensory-based therapies (occupational, speech-language, and feeding) for individuals with dysfunctional Sensory Processing. A critical foundation of the STAR treatment approach is fostering positive emotional and social growth and experiences through application of the DIR/Floortime™ approach.  Central to the STAR process, “family support services” are incorporated into programs to help parents and families deal with issues related to SPD. 

STAR Institute for SPD is looking for a licensed psychologist experienced in DIR/Floortime™, to direct and manage family support services at STAR Institute for SPD.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

Licensed Psychologist

At least 5-years of diagnostic assessment and relationship-based counseling with children and families.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Some managerial experience at a department or program level.

Proficient in:

  • DIR/Floortime™ certification (ICDL or Profectum)
    and / or
    Infant Mental Health Accreditation

  • Child-Parent Psychotherapy training and experience 

  • Trauma Informed Care

  • Developmental and strengths-based approach to intervention

  • Supervising mental health providers

  • Training/consulting non-mental-health providers

Preferences:

Proficient working with:

  • Multidisciplinary treatment teams, including physicians

  • Neurodevelopmental delays, learning differences, disabilities, disorders in children and / or throughout the lifespan

  • DSM-5, DC 0-5, and ICD-10 codes (for billing and diagnostic purposes)

  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite

  • Mac and PC computer systems for managing documents (e.g., storing, sharing, faxing, etc.)

Current / contemporary awareness of:

  • Neurodiversity movement

  • Current best practices in autism evaluations 

  • Sensory processing and integration 

  • Telehealth registrations highly beneficial

  • Family Systems mental health provision

Familiar with:

  • Functional Emotional Assessment Scale for Infancy and Childhood
    (Greenspan, DeGangi and Wieder)

  • Transdisciplinary models of work

  • Working collaboratively with teams of allied health professionals

  • Behavioral approaches to intervention

WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

Typical office environment

40 hours per week between the hours of 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, M-F.

  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms, legs and moving the whole body, such as lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of equipment and materials.

  • Must have physical capacity to perform 6 hours of direct treatment in the gym per day

DUTIES

  1. Be a member of STAR Leadership and Management

    • Leadership Team – Be an emissary of good will for STAR 

      • Participate in major STAR Institute events, marketing opportunities and fundraising activities

      • Highlight the STAR Institute and the STAR Institute treatment approach in national and local speaking engagements and educational presentations

      • Maintain excellent relations with STAR Institute families to ensure treatment needs are met

    • Management Team -- along with the Executive Director, Clinical Director, and Lead Therapists. 

      • Ensure fidelity to STAR Frame of Reference (focus on regulation, relationships and sensory processing)

      • Advocate for STAR families and best possible care for clients. 

      • Support all programs (e.g., baby, feeding, adult & adolescent) so STAR continues as a leader in its field. 

      • Identify new programs, treatments, strategies that enhance STAR, are profitable and allow STAR to continue to be the leading SPD treatment Institute. 

  2. Direct Family Support programs

    • Expand and enhance family support services and programs that support the STAR Institute treatment approach. 

      • Multi-Disciplinary Evaluations

      • Parent Education

      • OT/SLP Consultation and Co-Treatments

      • Liaison with external agencies 

      • Mental health triage as needed for complex children and families

      • Parent-child psychotherapeutic intervention, short and long term

    • Write protocols and procedures as needed to document and track family support outcomes.

    • Cooperate with research projects and processes for studies involving STAR clients.

  3. Manage and administer Family Support services and providers

    • Clinical oversight  

      • Consult with and supervise clinical staff weekly on issues related to family support.

      • Provide consultation as needed to clinical staff on mental health issues related to complex families and children (“red” flag families)

      • Facilitate discussions for solutions to complex treatment issues 

    • Administrative oversight

      • Documentation of clinical consistency, thoroughness, efficacy

      • Assure all company procedures are followed. 

      • Conduct performance evaluations of supervisees annually following established procedures

      • Mentor clinical staff in mental health concepts and roles

      • Assures HIPAA is being adhered to by mental health practitioners

      • Ensure departmental compliance with federal and state legislation related to mental health services

    • Program development
