We understand our world through our senses. Our ability to regulate our bodies and minds allows us to learn. We learn and grow best when in nurturing relationships. The interactions of these 3 foundational domains – sensory processing, regulation, and relationship – impacts every aspect of our development and participation throughout the lifespan. Additionally, the sensory domain has been identified as a diagnostic criteria or condition characteristic for several neurodivergent conditions (e.g. Autism, ADHD, SPD, Schizophrenia). This course introduces the domains of sensory processing, regulation, and relationships and their neuro-biological, behavioral, and functional intersections with one another that can support or derail function. This course supports multi-discipline participant integration of the information through guided discussions and open format questioning.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize primary roles and interconnected nature of sensory processing, regulation, and relationship in early development and overall health and wellness
  • Define the subtypes sensory processing differences and their impacts on regulation, attachment and relational skills, development, and participation in daily life
  • Identify at least three clinical implications of the sensory processing-regulation-relationship triad and application to the participant’s own practice/discipline/daily life

Who Should Attend

Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, special education teachers, students, and other professionals and individuals seeking a better understanding of disordered sensory processing.

Attendance Policy

Participants are required to attend the live-streamed sessions in real time to receive a Certificate of Completion for the program. Participants may miss 1 session during the livestreamed course to be eligible for a certificate of completion and CEUs. The course instructor(s) must be informed of any absences ahead of time. Emergencies or unplanned absences will be handled at the discretion of the course instructor(s) and Director of Education.

Video recordings are typically available by request to all participants shortly after each livestreamed session, however, this is not guaranteed due to potential technical issues. If video recordings are available, this can be reviewed in the event of a single planned or unplanned absence.

Participants of this program must meet the time requirements for module completion and participation in the live-stream portions of the course. Individuals who do not meet both time requirements will not receive AOTA or ASHA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.
