The Goal Attainment Scale (GAS) is an individualized outcome measure involving goal selection and goal scaling that is standardized in order to calculate the extent to which an individual's goals are met. This is an in-depth course on Goal Attainment Scaling applied to pediatric practice. Get experience and feedback in conducting parent interviews, writing measurable goals and insuring goals meet all necessary criteria. Discuss the importance of measuring outcomes and how to score goals at the end of treatment. Learn how to measure outcomes of each client or groups of clients for third party payers and increase referral sources by providing information about client outcomes. Engage parents in the goals writing process and shift your focus to parent priorities. Understand the value of engaging families, acknowledging parent priorities and enhancing their participation in the goal setting process.

Sarah A. Schoen, PhD, OTR/L
Director of Research

Dr. Schoen is an occupational therapist with 30 years of clinical experience and a doctorate in occupational therapy from New York University (2001). She completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship awarded by the Developmental Psychobiology Research Group at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Department of Psychiatry, working with Dr. Lucy Jane Miller. During her fellowship, she was awarded the Developmental Psychology Endowment Grant from the William T Grant foundation to study the Sensory Processing Scales, which she is co-developing and researching with Dr. Miller. Dr. Schoen is currently an Associate Professor at the Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions and has served on multiple doctoral committees.  She also co-developed and teaches the monthly Advanced Mentorship trainings at STAR Institute. She is certified in Neurodevelopmental Treatment and has advanced training in Sensory Integration Therapy, Therapeutic Listening, and assistive technology. Dr. Schoen received the Recognition of Achievement Award from the American Occupational Therapy Association in 1997 and the Virginia Scardina Award of Excellence from the American Occupational Therapy Foundation in 2011.

Carrie Schmitt, OTR/L, OTD
Occupational Therapist

Carrie Schmitt, OTR/L, OTD has 25 years of experience in pediatric occupational therapy practice.  In her work, she is guided by creativity, connection, and curiosity. This insatiable curiosity led Carrie on a 4-year journey studying interoception and its impact on development.  As a wife and mother of four children, Carrie brings not only her years of therapy practice but also lived experience to her work.

Attendance Policy:

Participants are required to complete the pre-recorded sessions and attend each of the livestreamed sessions in real time to receive Certificate of Completion for the program. The course instructor(s) request to be informed of any absences ahead of time. Emergencies or unplanned absences will be handled at discretion of the course instructor(s) and Director of Education.

Video recordings are typically available to all participants for up to 1 week after the recorded sessions, however this is not guaranteed due to potential technical issues. If video recordings are available, this may be reviewed in the case of a planned or unplanned absence.

Participants of this program must meet the time requirements for module completion and participation in the live-stream portions of the course. Individuals who do not meet both time requirements will not receive AOTA CEUs. No partial credit will be provided.

Cancellation Policy:

All registrations must be finalized or cancelled for a full refund 30 days prior to the course. Registrations cancelled less than 30 days prior to the course may be substituted or deferred to a future course sponsored by STAR Institute. Staff must be notified of substitutions at least 24 hours before the start of the event. Registrations cancelled due to a family emergency or other unexpected event, or illness will be deferred to a future course sponsored by STAR Institute.

In the event this program must be cancelled due to illness, fire, strikes, war, acts of God, terrorism or other causes that would prevent the event from taking place, STAR Institute will attempt to reschedule the event. If the event is unable to be rescheduled, STAR Institute will refund all tuition fees paid.
